March Mileage

Good steady riding this month, especially considering I felt like crud for a solid week.  Only one semi-epic - the mixed-terrain ride to honor the ridiculously gorgeous spring weather last Saturday.  Notched the belt at 66 miles on a variety of surface.  Other than that, it was mostly shorter rides on a steady basis.  Right about 370 miles in 16 “riding days”.  What I recall we used to call “laying a base”.   There were also 7 “sick days” which could be called “laying about.”

Quickbeam-fixed miles mostly. A couple of trail rides on the MB1, including tonight’s to end the month. The Hilsen was getting a new stem, and for some reason I managed to both cut the housing too short and not have any appropriate housing in the parts pile.

I’m actually pretty happy about the consistency. It’s been the most regular riding month in memory. Didn’t get to the gym but a couple times, and still haven’t gone out to run for it’s own sake. Sounds like an April goal, I reckon.  Along with staying healthy and not fretting about it.

You and I are running about even for mileage on the year. (You’ve got about 35 miles on me thus far.) I am trying to figure out the overall fitness thing. After years of being a schlub who just hopped on the bike and pedaled, I am beginning to notice that this approach isn’t working as well for me as it used to. Stretching and light jogging are in my future. Yikes.

Stretching, stretching, stretching is good. One of the best things to offset the positions that cycling puts one in. The one thing I try to do is “core” workouts - situps, crunches, ab machine - I have to be careful, because just doing ‘em carelessly tends to tweak old neck issues. But - the abs and core are the “hinge” through which cycling efforts go. I noticed the more ab stuff I did, the less I would get sore back or tight low back issues. Be careful and underdo any running - you probably have good endurance from cycling. I always seem to run too far and pay for it. So, my plan is to do short and easy runs well before cross season. That was one thing I didn’t do last year and suffered for it.

    We’re about even — I’m at 1115.

I am embarrassed. I was looking at my C-KAP log when tallying up miles. I goofed and should have noted that I was tracking kilometers. As a result, my previous observation is so wrong it makes me blush. Make that close to 600 miles, and around 940 kilometers as of 3/15/09. Ugh. ..::shakes head in amazement at the subtle advances of age::..

Yeah, but you keep taking 85/115 mile bites… If I don’t start taking some good loops soon, you’re gonna leave me in the dust.

Today, after going back and forth between work, errands and work, I got about halfway home before realizing I’d left my shoulder bag on my desk… “Thought things felt a little light!”
