Looks like the Orange County Wheelmen (CA) have gotten some momentum going for a specialty license plate to support the “Share the Road” program and outreach/education effots. They need 7,500 signatures or more to send it to the California legislature, and were above 4,650 when I signed.
Here’s the link to the information page - read down a bit and you’ll see the link to the petition itself:

February 4th, 2007 at 11:34 am hmmm, A cusory glance did not reveal where the proceeds of the license plate sales go. It implies the bike education program, but does not actually say it. Make sure. They tried to get one of these passed in TN, but the proceeds went directly to the Dept of Transportation, no funds for bike education, bike facilities etc. I am not sure it ever passed. I assume this is better, but I did not see the details anywhere… Overall I am supremely against vanity plates as they make it really hard to see what state the plate is from, and often kills the ability to read the plate at a glance. TN had over 100 different plate designs which makes plates almost irrelevant. The next step is the corrosive “choose life” plate and then it all goes down hill from there. My thoughts on the share the road plate is to skip the plate and get a bumper sticker for the car, and try to ride more.
February 4th, 2007 at 5:45 pm You make some fine points. I’ll admit, I read the info very “optimistically” and agree that they are not as specific as I would like. My core problem with Share the Road License Plates is that they have to go on cars… ;^)
